This is kitchen in a 1994 builder home in Austin's Rob Roy development. Lots of drywall, lots of white melamine. The clients wanted strong functionality for a growing family. They also wanted splashes of bright color.
I love the individual zones in this kitchen. Each does its job really well. Notice the teak end-grain cutting board (DeVos Woodworking, Dripping Springs).
I had never been asked to design an upper cabinet for a kitchen with 12' ceilings. The only practical way was to set it atop the island. This and other issues made for a tight squeeze around the vertical steel support (wrapped in wood -- notice the cantilevered steel beam, also dressed in wood). But it all works out fine, and there's lots of room to move around in this kitchen. Several people can work in it without tripping over one another.
The terrific tile in the alcove is Ann Sacks, from their Kibak line. The cabinetry is a mainly from Quality Custom Cabinetry, which sutton design reps. The tall oven/pantry unit in the corner is small-shop custom.
