the client sought an island-type layout despite the narrow space, so this design features an unusual, floor-to-ceiling freestanding structure constructed of cherry solids and veneers anchoring a galley-type kitchen. the extensive demolition required to open up the existing warren of small rooms and long, dark central hallway necessitated some fancy footwork with plumbing and electrical lines -- which now run through the island structure. built for a large family, the design features durable porcelain and rock maple flooring, ample storage, and multiple work zones. the overall space now has a terrific flow, and the central island is a show-stopper. the island worktop is teak, and is raised to 39"for greater comfort. this kitchen was featured in Kitchen Trends, Vol. 18 No. 1 (summer 2002).
