"the life of the party"

appearing in This Old House magazine, March 2004 issue

This design robustly expresses the concept of an "unfitted" kitchen in an exquisitely refined space reconfiguration. Furniture-like cabinetry partitions space and handles important functions. The previous plan's walls hacked up space, blocking sunlight and movement, and inhibiting gathering.  The redesign's open plan creates a kitchen central to the life of the home and improves sunlight and flow. Natural light enters from multiple angles into the entire renovated space, creating transparency and openness. N-S interior walls disappear, while an expanded, re-engineered E-W opening carries the structural load through structural steel. Cabinetry partitioning scales down the overlong E-W space to pleasing proportions. The front room, formerly pass-through space, is reclaimed by routing the N-S main walkway along one boundary.
