"a roman holiday"
the client asked for a master bathroom on a classical theme. the theme is executed here through both materials and motifs. the materials speak for themselves -- old-world stone tile and slab stone, custom glass, custom woodwork, faux-plaster paint effects, and crisp, deco-classical fixtures.
the classical design motifs are restrained but important in personalizing the room. the tile patterns are strongly classical -- a mix of running bond, straight mosaic, profiled trim, and other straight patterns in varying sizes of stone tile; note too the base trim/ogee base cap combination. there's custom window glass with an amphora design, set into an all-stone jamb for waterproofing in this wet location; the sandblasting affords privacy -- and we tested to make sure! the two custom furniture pieces both feature strong ogee profiles, a keynote of classical detailing. note the terrific radiusing of the top drawer of the drawer unit, as well as its ogee-shaped backsplash. the mirrored medicine cabinet unit, also custom, features marquetry work.
