The client asked for a bathroom that would combine the features of a children's bathroom and a more sophisticated guest bathroom -- a place for both the kids and the grandparents. Furthermore, the client wanted traditional geometric tile design but with some sort of theme -- no abstract patterns here. The design reconciles the various goals by incorporating a delightful graphic design (ocean, waves, sun, and spray) composed of ordinary square field tiles. This was made possible by using varying offset increments -- 1/4, 1/3, and 1/2 -- to create lots of movement in the tile design. The thin accent tile creates a visual break between the deepening color tones of the "ocean" and the surface where water meets air. The hope is that the tile design is playful in appearance but, on inspection, sophisticated in layout.

The "sea floor" of variegated-tone herringbone stone works well as a floor because of all the grout lines that provide grip. The rather fancy custom teak shelving and medicine cabinet are softened by using our trademark curves (the shelves) and cute resin hardware (cabinet knob). The sun-on-waves motif is carried through to the glass window panel, etched to echo the theme. The glass is insulated to prevent condensation buildup, tempered for safety, and set within a stone jamb for maximum moisture control.
