"a walk in the park"

As Seen In This Old House magazine, November, 2002

This long, narrow bathroom deep in the interior of the home gets no natural light. The bathroom formerly in this space featured basically the same layout as shown here, but a shower & tub combination was at the far end. The new room has only a shower, with an integrated tiled-in seat. To address the feeling of walking into a long dark closet, this design features a little visual joke. Entering the room, the visitor feels as though a path moves forward, along a curve, into an "open" doorway. The tile design of the doorway area uses tricks to give the suggestion of perspective -- of a horizon line with sky above and green grass below, executed in glass tile. The design also features dramatic commercial "path lighting" to continue with the theme. Rounding out the design are a totally custom lavatory with nickel accents, tone-on-tone wall colors, and a frameless glass shower enclosure. It was very difficult to get a camera into this space!
