the client asked suttondesign to ease a difficult transition space between two 10' x 10' square rooms forming the living spaces on the first floor of a large neo-colonial home without demolition of existing walls. the core design specifications were to trim-out both rooms similarly -- new window and passageway casings, installation of a custom mantel, crown moulding, careful light plan -- and then furnish them in somewhat complementary ways. yet each room was meant to maintain a distinct identity. notice the curvilinear rug shapes -- helping to ease the transition from room to room and yet still creating comfortable "islands" in each room. the furniture is heirloom-grade, establishing a brilliant visual display.
