Angles Away!
This
project shows tricks for fitting
a family-friendly, multi-user kitchen into a narrow rowhouse at a modest cost. A non-bearing wall was removed between
the old kitchen and the main living area,
permitting a custom-designed, workhorse farm table to straddle the
kitchen and living areas. The
cabinetry is entirely custom-designed for the space, but detailed very simply
to save money. A bit of extra money is spent on the kitchen
sink base and the various cabinet door hardware, for a big payoff on looks.
Features:
- The
use of angles on the cabinetry and soft geometry (curves) on the new
central table allow comfortable traffic circulation around the kitchen by
creating the necessary clearances.
- The
angle at the sink area permitted the
use of a generous sink bowl size along with a trash drawer and 18
in. dishwasher on a short span of wall.
- The
refrigerator, re-used and unadorned to save money, is recessed into the
wall, allowing the back door the clearance it requires and hiding the ugly
backside of the refrigerator.
- Attractive
track lighting allowed quality lighting without replacing the ceiling.
- Inexpensive
but colorful tile and paint enliven the space.
- Oven
zone, wet zone, and cooking zone are separated, allowing many people to
use the kitchen at once.
- Window
space is used for storage via attractive shelving, allowing light to
create interesting patterns as it enters the kitchen (morning sunshine).
- The
stainless steel counter w/ integrated sink is incredibly durable for
family living.
