- fireslate,
for counters. a modified, relatively lightweight concrete product, industrial
in origin, that vastly improves on regular concrete but retains useful hardness
and durability. half the cost of granite with many of the virtues. See
Example.
- trespa,
also for counters. another industrial material, sold as laboratory counter
and cabinet material. imagine a rugged formica surface, but one completely
bonded to a core (unlike regular formica, which is simply laminated onto plywood
or fiberboard). a good, inexpensive, everyday-use countertop.
See Example
- stainless steel.
the paradigm of ruggedness and durability, but very expensive and rather sterile.
we recommend stainless steel in small doses, where its usefulness cannot be
matched (sinks, range hoods). some of our clients reject stainless steel out
of hand, however, because of its unfriendly look. See
Example.
