city charms
completed in early 2005, this entirely customized kitchen space in old town alexandria, virginia, creates a new open-plan kitchen leading into a larger, hearth-centered living area (the main living area and hearth are not shown here). the new design replaces a crowded U-shaped kitchen that created a narrow passageway into the kitchen area. the kitchen is now mainly on the one long wall, with a large, under-stairs, pull-out pantry and a colorful storage cabinet on the opposite wall. formerly, the refrigerator was at the far end of the kitchen and was so large that the back door wouldn't open properly. the new refrigerator is at the near end and is much more nicely scaled for the room.
note some unusual touches: a 24"-wide built-in refrigerator with nice custom resin panels; tall magnetic chalkboard; stainless-steel deep-bin pot drawer, custom table and chairs, custom pot rack, custom etched cabinet glass -- custom everything, really. this kitchen is for a client who didn't want a chef's kitchen, but rather a comfortable, small kitchen that could accommodate the full range of cooking and prep. tasks when required.
